Disclaimer: The Average Creative
I'm not a prodigy, a genius, or even particularly talented. What I am is someone who's found a way to turn limitations into a creative outlet. I live with a neurological condition that makes the world a cause for sensory overload, and as a result, I’m wheelchairbound and largely housebound. My smartphone has become my universe, a tool that allows me to escape the confines of my reality and dive into a world of imagination. Nonetheless, my results and creative process might just surprise you!
A GLIMPSE INTO MY CREATIVE PROCESS
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but when it comes to creativity, it's often the most misunderstood. People are constantly asking me how I do what I do – how I structure a song, how I visualize a story, and how I craft that unique sonic world. The truth is, it's a blend of instinct, intuition, and a touch of magic that's hard to put into words.
So, rather than trying to explain my methods, I'm going to let my work do the talking. What follows is a peek behind the curtain, a collection of hints and snippets that will hopefully give you a sense of how my mind and process works.
From Blank Canvas to Putty!
Song Structure: Every song is a journey, and the structure is the roadmap. It's about finding the perfect balance of verses, choruses, bridges, and outros. I’ll share some of my song skeleton to give you an idea of how I build a track from the ground up.
Storyboarding: Visualizing a story before it's told is crucial. My storyboards are a mix of sketches, words, and emotions. I'll share some examples so you can see how I transition from concept to creation.
Sound and Vibe: The sonic landscape of a project is everything. It's the atmosphere, the mood, the emotion. I’ll share some sound palettes and mood boards to help you understand how I create immersive worlds.
The AI Enigma
I've been experimenting heavily with AI in my creative process. It's a tool that’s revolutionized the way I work. While I can’t fully articulate how it influences my thought process, I can share the results. These AI-generated parts help give you a glimpse into the collaborative nature of my work. Just to be clear, AI DOES NOT write or produce my music, it is only employed as an assistant for thashing out and documenting my ideas and other communications.
*NB: If you're really that interested in just one example of my own compositions, you can see a music video here: Civilisation
Remember, creativity is a personal journey. What works for me might not work for you. But hopefully, by sharing these insights, I can inspire you to explore your own creative process.
LETS DIVE IN WITH YOUR EXAMPLE

General Midi (GM) Channels and Patches
Before we dive into the composition, it's essential to understand how GM MIDI works, with the intention to capture the essence of your ideas in a General MIDI file, which can be easily edited or shared with collaborators.
Essentially, there are 16 MIDI channels, numbered 1-16, much like a 16 track mixer, which is used for recording midi events (sequencing), not actual sounds (sound recording). Each channel can play a different instrument as a midi event simultaneously, and all GM instruments (the sampled midi patches), are organized into banks. For simplicity, we'll use Bank 0 which contains 128 patches, numbered 0-127.
* NB: All suggested MIDI channel and patch assignments in the composition, can be adjusted based on your specific DAW or GM MIDI synthesizer setup.
Remember, the following is simply a suggested framework, which is part of my process. The GM sound set is limited, so its best to just focus on creating strong melodies and rhythms, rather than the sound quality of the instruments, as they can always be replaced at a later time.
STRUCTURE
Note to self: The structure for this composition incorporates tempo changes, chord variations, and a surprise twist. The base concept is a song about overcoming self-doubt and embracing individuality, using abstract lyrics to give them diversity, ambiguity, and relateability. By focusing on themes of self-empowerment and overcoming adversity, this song may resonate with a wider audience and inspire listeners to become empowered within themselves. Use modulation wheels and aftertouch to add expression. Experiment with reverb, delay, and chorus to create atmosphere. Automate parameters like volume, panning, and filter cutoff for dynamic changes. Don't be afraid to try different patches, combinations, and techniques.
